History of Arab American Heritage Month
Arab American Heritage Month began as a way to honor the contributions of Arab Americans to the U.S. The idea took root in 2017 when the Arab America Foundation launched a campaign to recognize the month formally.
It started small, with a few states supporting the initiative. However, the celebration gained momentum as more people saw the need to recognize Arab Americans’ impact on the country.
In 2019, U.S. Representatives Debbie Dingell and Rashida Tlaib introduced a resolution to declare April as Arab American Heritage Month nationally. Although the bill is still pending, recognition has grown every year.
In 2021, President Joe Biden officially acknowledged the month, making it a bigger part of national conversations. By 2022, several states, including Illinois, Virginia, and Oregon, passed legislation to honor the month permanently.
Today, Arab American Heritage Month serves as a time to explore and celebrate the cultural richness and contributions of the Arab American community.
It reflects the growing recognition of the diverse and vital role that Arab Americans play in shaping American society. Each April, more communities, schools, and organizations across the country join in the celebrations​.
