An important day for polar bears as it represents their home, Arctic Sea Ice Day aims to help humans grow in their knowledge about sea ice and understand why it is such an important part of the environment!

History of Arctic Sea Ice Day

Arctic Sea Ice Day is an initiative of Polar Bears International to draw attention to the fact that this vital landscape in the Arctic sea is diminishing, calling humans to make a change in the way they consider and act concerning sea ice.

The ecosystem of ice supports not only polar bears but also all sorts of other plants (algae), fish, whales, and other animals, as well as impacting humans.

Arctic Sea Ice Day seeks to bring more attention to the need for conservation education and action to protect the world’s sea ice landscape!

How to Celebrate Arctic Sea Ice Day

Learn More About Sea Ice

Get more informed and involved with Arctic Sea Ice Day by learning about and sharing important facts. It’s a great activity for parents and teachers to get the kids involved with as well!

Head on over to the local public library and check out some books on the topic, watch some documentary films or do some online research to discover more about the unique landscape of sea ice.

Check out some of these interesting facts to get started in the learning process:

  • Sea ice plays a vital role in the Arctic landscape ecosystem, compared to the role soil plays in the forest
  • Polar bears need sea ice to be able to catch their main source of food, ice seals
  • Melting sea ice results in disrupted climates. Why? because less sea ice means more heat absorbed into the ocean, which means less heat reflected away from the earth
  • Arctic sea ice is declining rapidly both in thickness and coverage due to climate warming

Check Out the Arctic Sea Ice Day Toolkit

The organizers of this event, Polar Bears International, provide an online toolkit to supporters of Arctic Sea Ice Day, helping folks learn about the day, build personalized content with shareable graphics, access important web links, and much more.

Promote Arctic Sea Ice Day in the Community
