Chhath Puja is a vibrant festival that celebrates and honors the Sun, which is seen as the source of all life. Families gather near rivers or other water bodies, creating a beautiful scene of offerings and rituals.

Brightly colored fruits, vegetables, and sweets are arranged in baskets while the setting sun reflects off the water, adding to the magical atmosphere. It’s a time when the air fills with the sweet fragrance of incense and the soft sounds of hymns, creating a serene yet uplifting environment.

This celebration holds special meaning because the Sun is believed to bring health, prosperity, and happiness. Participants fast, pray, and express gratitude for the blessings in their lives.

The rituals highlight a deep respect for nature, as many prayers also ask for the well-being of family members and friends. Watching the rising and setting sun on these sacred days fills people with a sense of peace and connection to the world around them.

Each moment feels purposeful, and the unity among those participating is a powerful reminder of shared hopes and dreams.

How to Celebrate Chhath Puja

Start the Day with a Clean Slate

Before diving into the festivities, begin by thoroughly cleaning your home and surroundings. A sparkling space sets the mood for positive energy to flow.

Don’t forget to wear clean, new, or freshly washed clothes to match the spirit of purity. This simple act helps to prepare mentally and spiritually for the day ahead.

Whip Up Traditional Delights

No celebration is complete without delicious food. Spend time in the kitchen making traditional offerings like thekua, rice pudding, and seasonal fruits.

If cooking isn’t your thing, try your hand at arranging beautiful fruit baskets. Every dish should be prepared without onions or garlic, keeping things simple but flavorful.

Head to the Nearest Water Body

Take a stroll to a nearby river, pond, or lake to offer your prayers. If there isn’t one close, don’t stress. A small vessel of clean water can work too.

This is where everyone gathers to catch the last rays of the setting sun, surrounded by the calming sounds of nature.

Sing and Share Joy

Hymns dedicated to the Sun fill the air as everyone participates in chanting. You don’t need to know all the words; just join in and feel the rhythm.

Music helps create an atmosphere of unity and peace, so sing your heart out or hum along.

Embrace the Spirit of Fasting

While fasting, many choose to stay hydrated with water or juice throughout the day. This personal challenge builds willpower and strengthens one’s focus on gratitude.

If fasting isn’t possible, supporting those who have good vibes is just as important!

History of Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja has deep roots in ancient times. People believe that it dates back to the Vedic period, over thousands of years ago. The festival focuses on the worship of the Sun, a practice that existed in many early cultures.

Some legends connect the celebration to Lord Rama and Sita, who offered prayers to the Sun after returning to Ayodhya. Others say it’s linked to Karna, the warrior from the Mahabharata, who was a devoted Sun worshiper.

The tradition was likely started by sages who practiced this ritual to gain energy from the Sun’s rays. They believed the Sun provided healing powers, and over time, people followed this belief.

Gradually, it grew into a larger celebration, with families coming together to show their respect for nature and express gratitude.

Though it began in regions like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the festival has spread across the country. Today, Chhath Puja brings communities together, connecting them with nature and shared customs.
