About Coton de Tulear Day

A somewhat rare breed of dog, the Coton de Tulear has almost become extinct several times throughout history. They were first bred in the United States in 1976 and have become a favorite of many celebrities including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Barbara Streisand, Jane Fonda and more.

Sometimes just called a “cotton dog” for short, this breed of dog is named after the city of Tuléar (Toliara), which is located in Madagascar, the island off the southern coast of Africa. The story goes that this small, white breed of dog may have originated from a group of canines that were shipwrecked near the island and swam across the channel to safety. The “coton” part of the name comes from the fact that the white, fluffy fur resembles cotton.

Coton de Tulear Day was founded by lovers of these little dogs to offer some attention to this particular breed that is adored by a special group of people.
