How to Celebrate Drina Regatta

Set Sail on the Drina

There’s no better way to join the Drina Regatta than by hopping on a raft and floating down the river. Gather a group of friends, grab some snacks, and deck out a vessel with colorful decorations.

Whether on a wooden raft, a kayak, or a makeshift boat, float down the scenic route with a big smile and a loud cheer. The more outrageous the raft, the better! Don’t forget to wave at everyone along the way – this is a parade, after all.

Picnic by the Shore

Not keen on getting wet? No problem! Set up a picnic along the riverbank to enjoy the parade from dry land. Pack a basket with local treats like ćevapi and some cold drinks. Find a cozy spot with a good view of the river.

Cheer for the rafters as they pass by, and join in the laughter and music. You might even end up in an impromptu dance-off with fellow spectators.

Join the Dance Floor

Every evening, the regatta turns into a giant party with live music and dancing. Head to the town square or the riverbank concert area.

Whether you’re a fan of traditional folk tunes or modern beats, there’s something for everyone. Grab a partner, or just dance with the crowd. Who knows, you might discover a hidden talent for the kolo dance.

Compete in Fish Soup Cook-Off

Got a secret recipe for fish soup? Test it out at the regatta’s famous cook-off competition. This is serious business!

Show off your cooking skills by the riverside and let the aroma of your dish draw in the crowd. You might win a prize, or at least a few new friends who want to know your culinary secrets.

Shop the Local Market

Explore the bustling market for unique souvenirs. Browse through stalls selling handmade crafts, traditional sweets, and local drinks like rakija.

Chat with vendors and learn the stories behind the products. It’s the perfect chance to take a piece of the Drina spirit home with you, or just to snack your way through the day

Enjoy the Drina Regatta with a sense of adventure and plenty of enthusiasm. There’s something for everyone, on and off the water!

History of Drina Regatta

The Drina Regatta began in 1994 in the small town of Bajina Bašta, Serbia. Locals, inspired by the history of river rafting in the area, started this unique event.

It was a way to honor the ancient tradition of wooden raftsmen, who once navigated these waters transporting goods. The initial gathering was modest, with only a few enthusiasts braving the waters in handmade rafts.

As the years went by, the regatta grew in popularity. More people wanted to experience the thrill and joy of this river journey. What began as a local celebration quickly attracted visitors from all over the country. By the late 1990s, it had become one of the largest events in the region.

Organizers expanded the festivities to include more activities. They added music, food stalls, and even competitions. This turned the regatta into a multi-day festival. People came not just to raft but to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere along the riverbanks.

The event kept growing, and soon it was attracting international tourists. Today, thousands gather every year to participate. It has become a symbol of the region’s culture and a major tourist attraction.

Despite its growth, the Drina Regatta has never lost its roots. It remains a joyful tribute to the river and the people who once relied on it. From humble beginnings, it has turned into a celebration of tradition and community spirit.
