“Do you remember… the 21st night of September?”

If you do, then you’re not alone! This catchy little phrase comes from the pop song titled September, a delightful little tune that makes everyone who hears it want to sing, dance – and remember – on this particular day!

How to Celebrate Earth, Wind and Fire Appreciation Day

Looking for ideas on how to celebrate this cool and laid back event? Check out a few of these to get started:

Listen to September

Hop onto that favorite place to play music, whether online or in true vinyl, and cue up the song, September by Earth, Wind and Fire.

Listen to the myriad of covers by other bands and singers as well. Don’t forget the one from the Trolls movie soundtrack. that includes the voices of Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake.

Those who want to really get into this day can play September on repeat all day long!

Record a Cover of September

Musicians are invited to get involved with this day in a special way by practicing and then recording their own cover version of the song.

Invite a few musical friends over to get really serious about it. After all, the original Earth, Wind and Fire ensemble had nine members including vocalists and jazzy musicians!

Host an Earth, Wind and Fire Appreciation Day Party

Go all out for this incredible group of musicians whose music has remained relevant over many decades!

Invite some friends over to an Earth, Wind and Fire celebration, encouraging them to dress up in garb from the ‘70s and ‘80s, when the band was at their peak.

Create a Special Soundtrack

Since this day is all about music, don’t forget to create an amazing soundtrack for this important event!

Whether listening on your own or with friends at a party, build a playlist that will reflect not only amazing songs from Earth, Wind and Fire but from their classic contemporaries as well.

History of Earth, Wind and Fire Appreciation Day

Released in 1978 by the Chicago-based band Earth, Wind and Fire, the song that is celebrated on this day was a track on the band’s “Best Of” album. The memorable melody and easy lyrics (“Ba-dee-ya”, anyone?) brought to its listeners a light-hearted celebration of love, happiness and joy.

Today, more than 45 years later, the song continues to be enjoyed not only by folks who remember it originally, but by a new era of young people. The song has been recorded as a cover by dozens of musicians, not the least famous of whom is Taylor Swift.

In 2018, September was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry naming it among a list of songs that are “culturally, historically or aesthetically important.”

Earth, Wind and Fire Appreciation Day started somewhere in the late twenty-teens, and the City of Los Angeles officially declared the day in 2019. Since then, it has taken off as an internet and social media sensation!
