Fastelavn is a lively celebration in Denmark, often compared to a mix of Halloween and Carnival. On this vibrant day, children dressed in colorful costumes fill the streets, knocking on doors for treats, much like trick-or-treating.

One of the most exciting activities is when children take turns hitting a wooden barrel filled with candy until it bursts open. The two children who break the barrel are crowned as the “Cat King” and “Cat Queen,” adding to the festive fun.

The celebration creates a cheerful break from the winter, bringing families and communities together for playful games and delicious sweets.

Reasons for Celebrating Fastelavn

The primary reason behind Fastelavn is rooted in centuries-old traditions. Originally tied to the days before Lent, it was a way for people to indulge before the long fasting period.

However, over time, the holiday became less focused on religion and more on family fun and community bonding.

The tradition of “hitting the cat out of the barrel” symbolizes driving away bad spirits, while the colorful costumes and delicious pastries help lift spirits during the dark, cold months. It’s a day that mixes old customs with modern festivities, offering joy to all ages.

History of Fastelavn

Fastelavn began as a blend of religious practices and local customs. Similar pre-Lenten customs in other parts of Europe served as inspiration for the festival, which began in Denmark in the 16th century.

Originally, it was a time for people to feast and celebrate before Lent’s fasting period. Peasants and townsfolk would gather for large meals, playful activities, and sometimes even parades.

One of the oldest customs was “Slå katten af tønden,” where people would hit a barrel decorated with a cat to chase away evil spirits. In earlier times, a real cat was placed inside the barrel, symbolizing bad luck or evil, but today, only candy and treats fill the barrel.

The event has transformed over the centuries, becoming less about religion and more about fun and community.

Costumes, special buns called “fastelavnsboller,” and family gatherings have become central to the celebration. Despite these changes, the heart of Fastelavn remains a joyous occasion that marks the transition from winter to spring, blending old traditions with modern festivities.

How to Celebrate Fastelavn

Dress Up in Creative Costumes

Everyone loves a good costume party, and Fastelavn is the perfect excuse to get creative. Whether it’s a princess, a superhero, or something entirely unique, there’s no wrong way to dress up.

Encourage everyone in the family to pick their favorite characters, and maybe even have a friendly costume contest to see who can come up with the most inventive look.

Bake and Enjoy Fastelavnsboller

No Fastelavn celebration is complete without indulging in some delicious fastelavnsboller. These sweet, cream-filled buns are a must-have for anyone taking part in the festivities.

Try baking them at home for a fun family activity, or visit a local bakery to grab a few. Don’t forget to add your own twist with different fillings or toppings.

Play “Hit the Cat out of the Barrel”

This traditional game is a highlight of Fastelavn. It’s similar to a piñata but with a Danish twist. Fill a wooden barrel with candy, and let the kids take turns trying to break it open.

The child who breaks the barrel is crowned the “Cat King” or “Cat Queen.” It’s a great way to keep the little ones entertained and sugar-high.

Go Door-to-Door for Treats

Encourage children to go door-to-door singing traditional Fastelavn songs and asking for treats. It’s much like Halloween, but with a Danish flavor.

Make sure they practice their songs and prepare some bags for all the candy they’ll collect. Adults can join in by preparing little treat bags to hand out.

Decorate with Fastelavnsris

Get crafty by making and decorating your own Fastelavnsris. These colorful, ribbon-adorned branches are a fun and easy way to add some festive flair to your home.

Use them to gently wake up family members in the morning, or simply display them as part of your Fastelavn decorations. It’s a playful nod to the holiday’s quirky traditions.
