History of Fastelavn

One of the oldest customs was “Slå katten af tønden,” where people would hit a barrel decorated with a cat to chase away evil spirits. In earlier times, a real cat was placed inside the barrel, symbolizing bad luck or evil, but today, only candy and treats fill the barrel.

The event has transformed over the centuries, becoming less about religion and more about fun and community.

Costumes, special buns called “fastelavnsboller,” and family gatherings have become central to the celebration. Despite these changes, the heart of Fastelavn remains a joyous occasion that marks the transition from winter to spring, blending old traditions with modern festivities.
