History of Fatherland Defenders Day

Initially called the Day of the Red Army, it celebrated the establishment of the Soviet armed forces. This date, February 23, was later recognized as a holiday in 1922.
After World War II, it became known as the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy. In Belarus, this tradition continued even after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The holiday took on a new name in 1998: Day of Fatherland Defenders and the Armed Forces of Belarus. President Alexander Lukashenko officially declared it a national holiday to honor both the military personnel and the historical significance of the date.
