As the landscape of healthcare has grown more and more complicated in recent years, those who work behind the scenes in the human resources departments are vital to keeping everything running.

From paperwork to compliance, from staffing to training, Healthcare HR employees play a pivotal role in this highly demanding industry.

Healthcare HR Week is here to show appreciation for these professionals who contribute to making the world a healthier place through their work!

History of Healthcare HR Week

The American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration (ASHHRA), is the organization responsible for getting Healthcare HR Week started.

This non-profit organization founded the event in 2012 to recognize the vital role that human resources professionals play in healthcare spaces all across the nation – and even the world!

Highlighting the “heartbeats of healthcare”, this week pays special attention to the humans behind the technology that keeps everything flowing in healthcare systems such as hospitals, medical centers, hospice facilities, long-term care, and more.

Sometimes also called Human Resources in Healthcare Week, this event celebrates themes each year that give a nod to the kind of work that these professionals do.

Some of the related themes from past years include The Irreplaceable Human Connection in 2024 and Strategic Partners for the Healthcare Workforce in 2021.

How to Celebrate Healthcare HR Week

Searching for ideas on how to get connected with Healthcare HR Week? Check out some of these activities:

Host a Healthcare HR Week Event

Healthcare organizations, medical facilities, and other interested parties can hold events during Healthcare HR Week that show appreciation to all of the folks behind the scenes.

Perhaps hold an appreciation luncheon and choose an honorary Healthcare HR Person of the Year to acknowledge. Distribute small tokens of appreciation such as gift cards, snack boxes, care packages, and more.

Sponsor a Healthcare HR Recruitment Event

Those who work in the Human Resources departments of the healthcare industry recognize that there are grave shortages in staffing.

In honor of Healthcare HR Week, perhaps this would be a great time for a job fair or recruitment event that specifically targets healthcare workers, including those in the human resources field.

Learn More About Healthcare HR

Those who are not in this field but are interested in celebrating Healthcare HR Week might do so by getting a bit more educated about the many facets of what these professionals do.

In addition to keeping staff in compliance with federal and state laws, healthcare HR employees also do perform some of these roles:

  • Staffing including recruiting, hiring, onboarding, ongoing training, and reducing turnover among employees
  • Promoting staff wellness including creating a healthy working environment and preventing burnout
  • Building and maintaining a positive work culture including perks, benefits, and opportunities for advancement

Pursue a Career in Healthcare HR

Just out of school and considering career options? Or looking into a midlife career change? Perhaps Healthcare HR would be the right field to get into!

Degrees in human resources, business management, psychology, or some other related area would be a great start to becoming a human resources coordinator, specialist, analyst, recruiter, assistant, and more.
