History of July Morning
July Morning began in the late 1970s in Bulgaria. A group of young people decided to gather at the beach to welcome the first sunrise of July.
They were inspired by the spirit of freedom and the love for rock music. The event took its name from the song “July Morning” by the British band Uriah Heep, which became an anthem for the occasion.
Originally, the gathering was a subtle act of defiance against the restrictive communist regime. People would secretly meet at the beach, sharing a desire for freedom and change. Over time, this small gathering grew into a beloved national tradition.
The celebration spread from Varna, a coastal city, to other parts of the country. Kamen Bryag, known for its cliffs and scenic views, became a popular spot. The tradition is unique to Bulgaria, with no similar event found anywhere else in the world.
John Lawton, the lead singer of Uriah Heep, even visited Bulgaria several times to join the celebrations. His presence made the event even more special for many fans. July Morning is now seen as a celebration of freedom, community, and the beauty of nature.
Today, people of all ages gather on beaches, mountains, and lakes to welcome the sunrise. They come together, sing, play music, and enjoy the peaceful moment when the sun rises, marking a fresh beginning.
