History of Launceston Cup

The Launceston Cup, initiated by the Tasmanian Turf Club in 1865, was the first horse race to be held. The first winner was Panic.

Initially, the race covered a distance of three miles (approximately 4800 meters). Over the years, the distance has changed several times, and since 2002, it has been set at 2400 meters.

The Cup was initially held as a Principal race and gained Group 3 status in 1980. One of the early champions was Strop, who claimed victory multiple times between 1866 and 1876. Many notable horses have won the race, contributing to its rich history and prestige.

Today, the Launceston Cup is a key event in the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival, attracting large crowds and top competitors.

The race combines thrilling horse racing with vibrant social gatherings, making it a significant cultural and sporting event in Tasmania. The ongoing excitement and competition keep the spirit of the original races alive, continuing to draw in horse racing enthusiasts from near and far.
