Understand Health Benefits of Good Posture

For some people, it might be helpful and more motivating to understand some of the foundational reasons behind aiming toward good posting. Take a look at and share a few of these health benefits to get on board with National Correct Your Posture Month:

  • Posture Helps with Breathing. When the shoulders are pulled back, more space in made in the chest cavity for the lungs to expand 
  • Posture Aids in Digestion. Being slumped or hunched over can make it difficult for the digestive organs to do their job, which can result in bloating, acid reflux, constipation and discomfort 
  • Posture Affects Sleep and Mental Health. Many people don’t realize that working on better posture can improve the ability to sleep which has a positive impact on mental health 
  • Posture Impacts Pain. Those who have better posture can help to prevent pain in the back, neck, shoulders and even in the joints

Practice Good Posture

Obviously, one of the best ways to go about celebrating National Correct Your Posture Month is for everyone to be mindful of the way they are standing or sitting and then work to improve it.

Pull the shoulders back, straighten out the spine and lengthen the neck while standing. And don’t forget to ensure the lower back is well-supported while sitting. For more tips on good posture, check with a primary care physician or chiropractor. 

Optimize Computer Posture

With so many people sitting in front of computers for hours on end, posture has become a challenging issue. Be sure to adjust the monitor and keyboard to an ergonomic height. And don’t forget to take regular breaks to stand up, stretch out and practice in honor of National Correct Your Posture Month.

History of National Correct Your Posture Month

One of the older observations around, National Correct Your Posture Month has been celebrated since it was established in 1959.

The event was started with a vision for improving the lives of those living with postural problems and pain, as a collaboration between the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress as well as other individuals practitioners and organizations. 

In more recent years, National Correct Your Posture Month has been spearheaded by Dr. Stephen Weiniger who is a posture expert and author of Stand Taller, Live Longer: A Posture & Anti-Aging Strategy.
