How to Celebrate National Egg Month

With a whole month of daily opportunities to celebrate the egg, there are plenty of ways to get creative! Take a look at a few of these ideas to get those creative juices flowing in anticipation of National Egg Month:

Consider Many Reasons to Love Eggs

Get on board with National Egg Month by considering a vast array of reasons that eggs are so lovable. Come up with some reasons and share them with others in person or through social media, starting with a few of these:

  • Eggs are versatile
  • Eggs are nutritious
  • Eggs are affordable
  • Eggs are delicious!

Enjoy Eating Eggs

Boiled, scrambled, poached or fried, eggs can bring a delicious and nutritious range of meals on their own. Or, add them into recipes for baking, soups, casseroles and more. In honor of National Egg Month take the challenge and see if it’s possible to eat eggs in a different way every day!

Decorate Eggs

While it’s true that decorating eggs might be a tradition that takes place around Easter it doesn’t need to be limited to that time! Boiled eggs are a tasty, healthy snack that can be enjoyed anytime.

And they’re often more fun to eat when the kids (or kids at heart!) have decorated them with crayons, stickers, natural dye baths and more.

Practice Healthy Egg Hygiene

Many people aren’t aware that eggs need to be handled and prepared properly to avoid contaminants. A few tips provided by the Egg Safety Center website should be considered when cooking with eggs:

  • Wash hands before and after handling eggs
  • Cook eggs thoroughly until whites and yolks are firm
  • Keep eggs at room temperature only for two hours or less
  • Recipes containing eggs should be cooked to 160 F or higher

History of National Egg Month

The background of National Egg Month can be traced back to the 1960s when it was used as a promotional tool to get more people to enjoy eating eggs.

Since then, the event has gone through different iterations and in the 1990s it was finally settled by the American Egg Board that it should be celebrated throughout the month of May.
