While many public libraries in the US do receive some funding from the government, it is often not enough to accomplish the programs and provide all the activities and resources the community could benefit from.

Because of this, most libraries have relationships with local businesses, organizations, groups, and individuals who help support the library’s programs financially through donations or membership programs.

National Friends of Libraries Week is here to show gratitude for those relationships and build more opportunities to make every local public library the place that can best serve the community!

History of National Friends of Libraries Week

National Friends of Libraries Week has been celebrated since 2005 to show appreciation for existing library friends and supporters while also improving community relations to build more friendships.

The event was founded by the American Library Association and continues to be an annual initiative that is promoted and supported by this non-profit organization along with other businesses, charities, groups, government agencies, and more.

Host Some Friends of Libraries Events

Make sure those supporters and friends of the local library feel cared for and appreciated during this week through various events and activities!

Perhaps it would be possible to host a private thank-you gathering, such as a cocktail hour or coffee morning where local businesses will donate the items needed to cater the event.

Or maybe a family day on the lawn of the library would be a fun way to celebrate National Friends of Libraries Week, with kids’ activities, games, relay races, a bounce house, and more.

Become a Friend of the Library

Many local libraries have membership programs that offer the patrons special privileges in exchange for membership.

Some programs encourage monthly fees while others prefer annual donations. Others might build relationships through fund-raising events or community book drives.
