National Heather Day
A great time to show appreciation for and honor all of the people in the world who are named Heather – or to exchange sweaters – National Heather Day is here just for the fun of it!
History of National Heather Day
The name “Heather” for girls can be traced back hundreds of years, likely originating in Scotland where the flowering heather plant is prolific.
In the mid-20th century, the name became very popular, even topping the charts of baby names in the United States in 1972.
But National Heather Day got its start a bit more recently than that. This day sprung up out of pop culture, specifically emerging from a 2020 pop song by singer Conan Gray, called “Heather”. Going viral on TikTok not long after the song’s release, the trend of celebrating this day has to do with some specific lyrics:
I still remember the third of December, me in your sweater
You said it looked better on me than it did you
Since then, National Heather Day has been observed on this day through a grassroots movement where people listen to the song, sing the lyrics and even exchange sweaters as gifts.
How to Celebrate National Heather Day
New to National Heather Day and looking for ideas to participate? Check out a few of these to begin with:
Listen to the Song ‘Heather’
Of course, on the top of the list of things to do on National Heather Day would be to cue up Spotify or some other music platform and play Conan Gray’s song on repeat!
Maybe it would be fun to listen to the entire album by Gray, called Kid Krow, with some other singles like Comfort Crowd or Wish You Were Sober.
Exchange Sweaters
Purists who are interested in doing just what the song says might be interested in sharing sweaters in celebration of National Heather Day. Borrow a boyfriend’s sweater or raid a sister’s closet to see what sort of sweaters might be there for the taking!
Celebrate a Heather
Those who actually have a friend or family member in their life named Heather might want to make a big deal out of them in honor of National Heather Day.
Perhaps, if Heather is a plant lover, present them with a gift of a heather plant to brighten their day in the beginning of winter. Find all sorts of reasons to delight and enjoy anyone by the name of Heather on this fun little day!
Watch the Movie Heathers
This cult classic, dark comedy film is an odd one, for sure. Certainly it brings in some strange themes and almost acts as an ‘80s predecessor to Tina Fey’s Mean Girls, but (spoiler alert) with a much darker ending.
Both movies explore elements of high school that include cliques, bullying and depravity. But Heathers stars Christian Slater and Winona Rider, giving it an entirely different vibe that might be just right for watching on National Heather Day!
