History of National Leif Erikson Day

National Leif Erikson Day began in Wisconsin in 1929, marking the first official recognition of the Norse explorer in the United States.

The idea gained momentum when Minnesota followed suit in 1931, reflecting the strong Scandinavian heritage in the region.

In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a one-time proclamation, acknowledging the significance of Erikson’s voyages. However, it wasn’t until 1964 that Congress authorized an annual observance, leading President Lyndon B. Johnson to formalize the day through a proclamation.

The choice of October 9th holds historical importance, commemorating the arrival of the Norwegian ship Restauration in New York Harbor in 1825.

This event marked the beginning of organized Norwegian immigration to America, symbolizing the enduring connection between the two nations.

Since then, every U.S. president has continued the tradition, issuing yearly proclamations to honor Leif Erikson and celebrate the contributions of Nordic Americans.
