National Mental Health Provider Appreciation Day is a special day to honor the dedication and hard work of mental health professionals.

These individuals, including therapists, psychiatrists, and counselors, play a crucial role in supporting mental well-being. They offer care, compassion, and guidance, helping people manage their mental health challenges and improve their quality of life.

Reasons for Celebrating National Mental Health Provider Appreciation Day

We celebrate this day to show gratitude to those who provide essential mental health services. Mental health providers work tirelessly to help people navigate difficult times, manage mental health disorders, and lead healthier lives.

These professionals often deal with high-stress situations and provide a safe space for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings.

Recognizing their efforts helps reduce the stigma around mental health issues and encourages more people to seek the help they need.

History of National Mental Health Provider Appreciation Day

National Mental Health Provider Appreciation Day was founded in 2020 by Anne C. Totero. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Anne saw the critical need to honor mental health professionals who were working tirelessly to support those struggling with mental health issues.

She launched this initiative to recognize the efforts of therapists, counselors, psychiatrists, and other mental health providers who often go unnoticed.

The first observance took place on May 12, 2020, as an unofficial day of appreciation. Over the next two years, Anne advocated tirelessly, gaining support from local news outlets, advocacy groups, and national associations.

Her efforts paid off when Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers officially proclaimed May 12 as National Mental Health Provider Appreciation Day in 2022. This proclamation acknowledged the essential role of mental health providers and aimed to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues.

The creation of this day not only highlighted the dedication of mental health providers but also emphasized the importance of mental health care.

The initiative has inspired similar recognitions in other states, with the goal of achieving national recognition across the United States.
