Often referred to as “unicorns of the sea”, narwhals are delightful and unique creatures that live in the cold waters of the Arctic Ocean.

Although they are not yet considered endangered, narwhals are on a list of animals of “special concern” due to the impact of climate change on their living environment.

National Narwhal Appreciation Day seeks to improve public awareness of these underwater mammals, increase awareness about their needs and let everyone know what they can do to help!

How to Celebrate National Narwhal Appreciation Day

Thinking of ways to get more involved with this year’s Narwhal Appreciation Day activities? There are plenty of opportunities! Get creative with fun ideas or check out a few of these to begin with:

Learn Fun Facts About Narwhals

One of the most excellent ways to get connected with National Narwhal Appreciation Day would be to invest a bit of time and some brain cells in learning a bit more about these fascinating underwater creatures.

Head over the library to check out a book, do some online research, or take a look at a few of these fun facts to get started:

  • While they may look like unicorns, the ‘tusk’ is actually a tooth unlike that of any other animal – filled with nerve endings and helping them to detect information and also useful for eating
  • Narwhals spend their lives in the waters of the Arctic, including places like Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia
  • The average age of narwhals is 30-40 but some have been known to live for up to 50 years or more
  • As narwhals age, they change color from speckled grey-blue at birth to grey-black during teen years, to speckled grey in adulthood and then almost all white in old age

Support a Narwhal Charity

Many different animal rescue and conservation organizations are invested in helping to preserve the lives of narwhals and other sea creatures.

Check out the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Narwhal Rainbow Alliance, the National Wildlife Federation and many others, and consider supporting their work by adopting a narwhal or making a donation to their conservation efforts.

Share with Others

Get online and spread the world about National Narwhal Appreciation Day!

Make a post on social media, share a link to a charity or find some other unique way of raising awareness and spreading the word about how cool these creatures are.

Make Environmentally Friendly Choices

One excellent thing that every person can aim for is to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle that helps to reduce their carbon footprint and minimize climate change.

Other activities such as boycotting earth-harming companies and speaking up for climate-friendly governmental policies are also helpful in protecting not only narwhals but the entire planet!

History of National Narwhal Appreciation Day

While there are a number of different grassroots iterations of days that show appreciation to narwhals – and we support them all – National Narwhal Appreciation Day celebrated on this date seems to have roots that date back to at least 2012.

No matter who started it or when it began, however, the most important thing is that these fancy little creatures with their unique horns are celebrated and appreciated!
