History of National Peace Rose Day
The story behind National Peace Rose Day can be traced back to the 1930s, in the years just prior to World War II. While the history of this rose is complicated, much like the era that brought it to life, it was developed as a hybrid in France by a horticulturist named Francis Meilland.
Originally named the Madame A. Meilland rose, after the mother of the horticulturist. This fascinating rose was cultivated in France from 1935-1939 but it was quickly sent to other places to protect it from the coming invasion of the Germans.
Cuttings were sent to friends in countries including Italy, Germany, Turkey, as well as to Robert Pyle in the United States.
The rose grew particularly well in the US and, on April 29,1945, the rose was officially introduced by the Conard Pyle company to commemorate the fall of Berlin to the Allied Forces. The flower was named the ‘Peace Rose’ to represent the world’s great desire to live in peace.
Today, National Peace Rose Day continues to be celebrated each year as a symbol of the way this flower was grown through cooperation between people in different nations.
