From its origins in southern Italy to making its way in the United States in the early 1900s, pizza has a rich and robust history that has made it a dish that is beloved literally all around the world. And National Pizza Week is here with seven full days to celebrate!

History of National Day

The story of National Pizza Week goes back to sometime in the 1980s when pizzeria owners started the celebration. The purpose behind the day was to draw attention to the restaurants during their slower winter seasons.

Since then, this event has grown throughout the country and even into other parts of the world. The UK tends to celebrate National Pizza Week during the month of November.

How to Celebrate National Pizza Week

Check out some of these tasty ideas for celebrating National Pizza Week:

Enjoy a Wide Variety of Pizza

Order delivery, pick up some takeout or head on over to a local pizza joint for a delicious pie!

National Pizza Week is just the time to live out those pizza fantasies for seven full days of celebratory goodness. Some diehard pizza fans might choose to eat pizza from a different place every night of this important week.

Or, those who are serious about indulging, might want to perform a pizza crawl where several pizza places are visited during one evening!

Host a Pizza Party

Remind the boss that it’s time for National Pizza Week and get them to order pizza at work for lunch, or host a pizza party at home for family or friends. No matter who is invited, the truly most important guest of honor is, of course, the pizza!

Visit Some Iconic Pizzerias

While pizza certainly does have origins in Italy, American pizza has its own distinctions that are worth celebrating during National Pizza Week!

In honor of this important event, perhaps it would be a good idea to get out of town and take a trip to some of the most iconic pizza joints in the US. Check out some of these for starters:

  • Lombardi’s Pizza, New York City. Located in Little Italy in Manhattan, this was the first licensed pizzeria in the US and it’s still in business
  • Pizzeria Uno, Chicago. This one has a reputation for being the inventor of the Chicago-style deep dish pizza
  • Buddy’s Rendezvous, Detroit. Creating the first-known square pizza in the US, Buddy’s is responsible for what is now considered Detroit-Style Pizza
  • Barone’s Pizza, Los Angeles. Considered to be the longest running pizza place in LA since it was established in 1945

Other celebrations at Days of the Year that shine a spotlight on this beloved food include National Pizza Day on February 9, Pizza Pie Day on March 14, and National Pizza Month which is celebrated throughout October.
