Even though presidents are often made into the recipient of jabs or the butt of the joke, in this case, the joke actually comes from the president. Although when people think of presidents, sense of humor may not be at the top of the list of characteristics, but over the years some presidents have actually been fairly funny.

National Presidential Joke Day is here to give a little honor and respect to those presidents who have managed to hold this office and have been able to laugh a little too!

History of National Presidential Joke Day

National Presidential Joke Day dates back to August 11, 1984 when Ronald Reagan made a fairly unexpected joke during a sound check that would turn into a rather large faux pas. The joke was a fake announcement toward the end of the Cold War, where Reagan said that he had “signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever, we begin bombing in five minutes”. Although traditionally presidential soundchecks were typically kept private by the networks, this one got leaked.

While this joke by Reagan came under harsh scrutiny and was highly criticized, particularly by the Soviet Union, the incident also helped the people to see that the president was truly a human and that the presidential office may come along with some humor that doesn’t always hit the target. National Presidential Joke Day developed out of this incident and has been celebrated and commemorated in a variety of ways since that time.
