History of National Summit Day
Backpacker Magazine created National Summit Day in 2017. They wanted to inspire people to explore mountains and enjoy the outdoors. The idea was simple—get outside, hike up, and enjoy the view from the top.
This event takes place every year on the first Saturday in August. Since it began, more and more people have joined the movement, climbing peaks all across the country.
The magazine teamed up with other outdoor brands and nature lovers to spread the word. Their goal was to promote hiking, outdoor adventure, and appreciation for natural beauty.
Summit Day also encourages physical activity and mental wellness through time spent in nature. It’s not about climbing the tallest mountain. It’s about the journey, the effort, and the sense of achievement at the summit.
Families, solo hikers, and groups mark the day in many ways. Some take short walks up local hills. Others reach for high peaks with more effort and preparation. Everyone finds joy in the challenge and peace at the top.
National Summit Day has grown into something more than a hike. It’s a celebration of nature, self-growth, and community. People all over the country now look forward to it each year.
