Have you ever thought about what happens after the sirens fade or the battlefield quiets down?

National VFR Day brings attention to the emotional toll that veterans and first responders carry long after the action ends. These brave people often keep going, even while struggling inside.

This day encourages everyone to look past the uniform and see the human stories behind it. Their strength isn’t just about courage in the moment—it’s also about facing the aftermath.

Support matters more than most people realize. The Veterans & First Responders Foundation uses this day to highlight programs that help heal invisible wounds.

They focus on mental health care, peer support, and safe spaces where people can talk freely. These resources help break the silence and offer real ways forward. National VFR Day reminds us that recovery is possible, especially when no one has to do it alone.

How to Celebrate National VFR Day

National VFR Day offers a meaningful opportunity to honor and support veterans and first responders. Here are several engaging ways to participate:

Attend a Local Event

Many communities host gatherings such as parades, ceremonies, or sports events to recognize these heroes. Participating in these activities shows appreciation and fosters community spirit.

Support Relevant Charities

Consider donating to organizations dedicated to assisting veterans and first responders. Contributions help fund essential programs and services that benefit these individuals and their families.

Volunteer Your Time

Offering your skills or time to local veterans’ hospitals, fire stations, or police departments can make a significant impact. Volunteering provides direct support and demonstrates gratitude for their service.

Organize a Fundraiser

Hosting events like charity runs, bake sales or benefit concerts can raise funds and awareness. Engaging your community in such initiatives amplifies support for these heroes.

Share Their Stories

Use social media platforms to highlight personal stories or achievements of veterans and first responders. Sharing their experiences raises awareness and encourages others to express their appreciation.

Write Letters of Appreciation

Sending heartfelt letters or cards to local departments or individuals acknowledges their hard work. Personal messages can be profoundly uplifting.

History of National VFR Day

National VFR Day began in 2023 to raise awareness about the mental health struggles of veterans and first responders. It was started by David Knott, a U.S. Navy veteran and firefighter.

He also founded the Veterans & First Responders Foundation, a group that supports healing through wellness programs and peer networks. The first National VFR Day took place on the first Saturday in August 2023. Since then, the event has grown and reached people across different states.

Knott wanted a day where people could focus on those who serve and what they often face after the job is done. Many carry deep stress, trauma, or grief long after returning home or finishing a shift. This day isn’t just about saying thanks.

It’s about making space to talk, listen, and connect. Through this national effort, more people are learning how to offer meaningful help.

The Veterans & First Responders Foundation continues to lead the cause. They provide safe, supportive spaces where people can heal, share, and recover. National VFR Day gives that mission a louder voice and a bigger reach.
