History of the Pan-Armenian Games

The Pan-Armenian Games started in 1999 with the goal of uniting Armenians from all over the world through sports.

Ashot Melik-Shahnazaryan, a Soviet-Armenian diplomat, envisioned these Games after seeing the Pan-African Games in 1965. However, the idea only became a reality decades later after gaining support from various Armenian communities and organizations.

The first event took place in Yerevan, Armenia, bringing together over 1,100 athletes from 63 cities worldwide.

The competition featured seven sports, including football, basketball, and tennis. It was a milestone in connecting Armenians from the homeland and the diaspora, promoting unity and cultural pride through sports.

The event has grown significantly, now including summer and winter editions, with participants from more than 35 countries. It serves as a powerful symbol of global Armenian solidarity and the spirit of athleticism.

The organizing committee, backed by the Armenian government and the International Olympic Committee, made this ambitious project possible.

Each edition of the Games attracts more athletes and a wider range of sports, making it a significant event for the global Armenian community.

It’s a unique platform that combines competition with cultural celebration, strengthening ties across borders and generations.
