History of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) Week
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Week began as a way to celebrate and recognize the essential work of pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) in children’s healthcare.
The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP), founded in 1973, has long advocated for the role of PNPs in promoting health and well-being for infants, children, and adolescents.
Over the years, their efforts have expanded to honor PNPs with a designated week to highlight their contributions and raise awareness of their role in healthcare.
This special week gained traction in 2013 when the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American College of Nurse Practitioners merged. This merger bolstered national recognition and helped establish Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Week as an important event.
During PNP Week, the focus extends beyond simply recognizing these practitioners to emphasizing their impact on public health.
Many PNPs work in communities where pediatric healthcare is hard to access, bridging gaps in rural and underserved areas. Their work includes educating families on issues like nutrition, behavioral challenges, and preventive care, all while helping children thrive.
This week also highlights the importance of attracting more nurse practitioners into pediatrics to ensure every child has the opportunity for healthy development and care. By honoring PNPs, PNP Week encourages more people to support and appreciate those who devote their careers to children’s health.
