The festivities bring together people from all walks of life, emphasizing unity and respect for all individuals, regardless of their background or identity.

Pride Cymru also offers a wide range of activities, from family-friendly zones to energetic cabaret shows. There’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The event not only entertains but also educates and inspires attendees to continue working towards a more inclusive society.

History of Pride Cymru

Pride Cymru started as a response to increasing hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community in Cardiff. In 1999, South Wales Police partnered with the local community to create a safer environment, leading to the first Cardiff Mardi Gras.

This event was held in September 1999 and marked the beginning of what would later become Pride Cymru’s Big Weekend.

The event quickly gained popularity and evolved over the years. Originally, it was a small one-day gathering, but it has since grown into a major festival.

By 2012, it included a parade through Cardiff city center, expanding beyond its initial venue. This transformation reflected the increasing support and recognition of LGBTQ+ rights in Wales.

Nowadays, Pride Cymru is one of Wales’ leading LGBTQ+ charities. It hosts thousands of attendees annually and aims to promote equality and celebrate diversity.

The event includes performances, parades, and educational activities, all of which aim to foster acceptance and understanding within the community.
