Schools Library Media Center Week
Schools Library Media Center Week highlights the invaluable role of library media centers in schools across the nation. These centers are much more than book collections; they are dynamic spaces that connect students to a world of knowledge, resources, and inspiration.
Through their unique blend of traditional books and digital resources, media centers provide students with opportunities to explore, read for pleasure, and develop critical thinking skills in a supportive setting!
How to Celebrate Schools Library Media Center Week
Schools Library Media Center Week offers plenty of ways for communities to jump into fun and meaningful activities.
This week is all about celebrating the heart of the school: the library media center! Here are some lively ideas to bring out the best in your local library and get everyone excited about reading and learning.
Host a Book Donation Bonanza
Encouraging book donations can create a lasting impact on any school library. Families, teachers, and community members can contribute books in great condition.
These donations keep shelves fresh and vibrant, providing new stories and resources for students. The library can even hold a mini celebration for the donors, making the day extra special!
Bring Out the Inner Detective
Turn the library into a mystery-solving playground with a scavenger hunt! Create a list of clues and fun tasks that lead students to different library sections and resources.
This activity adds a sense of adventure while teaching students how to find information in various formats. A small reward for successful “detectives” will keep things lively!
Organize a Creative Storytime
Invite a local author or teacher to host a creative story hour in the library. They can bring stories to life by reading aloud or even acting out parts!
This unique experience promotes a love for books and lets students discover the magic of storytelling. Adding a discussion or Q&A after the story builds engagement and excitement.
Dive into Digital Literacy
Hold a digital skills session focusing on navigating online resources safely and responsibly. Many students find online information confusing, so a librarian-led session can introduce them to the best research sites and digital tools. This event supports digital citizenship, helping students develop smart online habits.
Celebrate Librarians as Heroes
Spotlight the library staff by organizing a “Librarian Appreciation Day.” Set up a display that shares fun facts about what librarians do behind the scenes.
Students can create thank-you notes or cards, showing appreciation for the guidance and support librarians provide every day. It’s a fun way to recognize their hard work!
History of Schools Library Media Center Week
Schools Library Media Center Week was officially launched by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) in 1985. This idea stemmed from a campaign led by AASL leaders, including Lucille Thomas, who advocated for an annual celebration that would emphasize the role of school libraries in supporting student learning.
Thomas, alongside AASL President Judy King, worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life, culminating in a grand ceremony at the U.S. Capitol to mark the event’s debut.
Since then, this week has highlighted the ways school libraries help students access information, develop research skills, and encourage reading for enjoyment. It aims to remind communities that libraries are hubs of knowledge, providing resources that go beyond textbooks, such as digital tools, multimedia resources, and collaborative learning opportunities.
Schools Library Media Center Week underscores how vital these centers are in creating a supportive learning environment, regardless of a student’s background or resources.
For over three decades, the event has continued to grow, drawing attention to the value of school libraries in fostering information literacy, critical thinking, and digital citizenship. Each year, librarians organize activities to engage students and demonstrate how libraries can enhance learning experiences across subjects.
This week also honors the dedicated librarians and staff who manage these spaces and actively shape students’ learning experiences. School librarians provide guidance on research, teach digital literacy, and introduce students to information safety—all skills that extend well beyond school.
Media centers can make a profound difference for students in underserved areas. They serve as safe, nurturing places that bridge educational gaps and empower students to thrive.
