History of the Day of the Virgin of Luján
The Day of the Virgin of Luján celebrates a centuries-old story tied to a small statue of the Virgin Mary. It all began in 1630 when two statues arrived in Argentina from Brazil. They were destined for different locations, but something strange happened.
The oxen pulling the cart carrying one statue stopped near the Luján River. No matter what the drivers tried, the cart wouldn’t budge until they removed the statue. The people saw this as a sign that the Virgin wanted to stay there.
Don Rosendo Oramas, a local landowner, built a small chapel for the statue in his home. This humble start grew into what is now the grand Basilica of Luján, the center of annual pilgrimages.
In 1887, Pope Leo XIII crowned the statue as Our Lady of Luján, making her the official patroness of Argentina. Her influence spread quickly, and she became a symbol of protection for travelers, police, and the nation.
Over time, devotion to the Virgin of Luján increased. People began to visit the shrine regularly, bringing their prayers and concerns.
