Weather Observers Day
Attention weather enthusiasts, cloud watchers, sunshine seekers and rain makers! This is a day to unite those who have a exceptional penchant for knowing, feeling, and appreciating (or complaining about!) the local climate.
It’s time to celebrate National Weather Observers Day!
How to Celebrate National Weather Observers Day
Keep a Weather Log
Those who are interested in observing the patterns of the weather just for their own information or for a topic of conversation among friends might be interested in keeping their own personal weather log.
Rather than simply receiving what the weather channels or weather apps offer, this is a detailed log for the particular area that weather hobbyists can enjoy.
A weather log should include information such as temperature and current weather, a well a these factors:
- Barometric pressure and dew point
- Rainfall in the past 24 hours
- Wind (speed and direction)
- Clouds (type and % coverage)
Enroll in Weather Spotting Training
While the people who work in weather are important, they also rely heavily on the information that is given to them through a network of weather hobbyists living all over the nation and the world.
These ‘weather spotters’ are lay people who have a bit of specialized training in the discipline of how to observe and report on the weather.
In honor of National Weather Observers Day, sign up for an online course through the National Weather Service to learn more!

History of National Weather Observers Day
National Weather Observers Day was founded back in 1989 when Alan Brue, a university student in New York, had the idea to invite anyone with a love for weather to celebrate!
While it might seem that Alan Brue might have been enrolled in a weather program, he wasn’t. He was simply a person who enjoyed tracking the weather.
So although weather professionals are certainly invited to celebrate this day, it’s really for anyone and everyone who feels compelled to observe the weather!
