A fascinating game that started in North America and has grown over the years to be a major sensation, basketball is actually a simple sport that is played all over the world in neighborhood parks and household driveways as well as in enormous stadiums with thousands of fans.

World Basketball Day is here to give a nod to the heritage of this sport, acknowledging the positive influence basketball has on individuals, families, neighborhoods and communities.

How to Celebrate World Basketball Day

Score some points on World Basketball Day by checking out a few of these activities and plans for the day:

Shoot Some Hoops!

Whether it’s grabbing a basketball and tossing it into the bucket at a pickup game in the park, or signing up for an official community basketball league, there are plenty of opportunities for celebrating World Basketball Day with a game of hoops.

Visit a Basketball Hall of Fame

A number of places in the US are ready to receive visitors in honor of World Basketball Day! Plan a visit to one of these:

  • Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA
  • Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle, IN
  • National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City, MO

As an added bonus, those in Europe might consider visiting the FIBA House of Basketball located in Switzerland. The trip might come at a cost – but admission is free! Or take a virtual tour through the organization’s website.

Watch Some Basketball

Since this day takes place in the winter, it shouldn’t be too hard to find a basketball game to watch in honor of World Basketball Day.

From the NBA or college games that are televised to catching local high school or middle school basketball teams in person, this is a fun day to enjoy the vigor and excitement of being a basketball fan!

Other events celebrated at Days of the Year in relation to World Basketball Day include National Basketball Day on November 6, Play Basketball Day on December 2 and National Physical Fitness and Sports Month in May.

History of World Basketball Day

The first ever World Basketball Day was celebrated in 2023 as a result of a resolution that was adopted through the United Nations General Assembly.

One of the motivations behind establishing this day is linked to the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, recognizing that sport and physical activity has the power to inspire community, break down barriers, overcome discrimination and so many other positive aspects.

World Basketball Day is also celebrated in collaboration with other organizations, including the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the US’s National Basketball Association (NBA), and also in cooperation with the Naismith Hall of Fame.

The date of this event is aligned with the historical moment on December 21, 1891, when the first official basketball game was played at the YMCA training school in Massachusetts.

Led by Canadian PE teacher, Dr. James Naismith, the game was developed to be played inside, keeping students busy and physically active during the colder winter months.
