History of World Cerebral Palsy Day
Once upon a time, in 2012 to be exact, a mighty alliance formed between the Cerebral Palsy Alliance in Australia and United Cerebral Palsy in the USA.
They cast a spell to create World Cerebral Palsy Day on October 6th, uniting over 450 magical groups from 65 different realms (countries). Their quest? To make the world a kinder, more inclusive place for the 17 million folks living with cerebral palsy.
The first quest was titled ‘Change My World in 1 Minute’, where people were invited to pitch ideas for inventions that could revolutionize the lives of those with cerebral palsy.
Over 470 ideas were sent flying in on their website, like paper airplanes with big dreams. The top three were picked, and a team of wizards (okay, researchers) from the University of Virginia in the USA conjured a solar-powered wheelchair.
It was a gift to a man named Alper in Turkey, making his and many others’ worlds a bit brighter on World CP Day 2013.
By 2015, the movement had transformed into a full-blown social crusade, tackling six major challenges faced by people with cerebral palsy worldwide. Their website had become a treasure trove of tools and resources, helping local heroes take action and tighten the fabric of this global community.
So, every year on October 6th, people across the planet don their green capes (figuratively speaking) to spread awareness, share stories, and celebrate the achievements of those living with cerebral palsy.
They light up social media with #worldcerebralpalsyday and rally their friends to join the cause, proving that when we come together, we’re true “Together Stronger“.
