Year of Soils
The Year of Soils is a concept initiated by Thailand to raise awareness of the importance of managing the earth’s soil reserves in a sustainable manner. Via the Global Soil Partnership, they hope to have the UN endorse their call for member countries to ensure the continued health of a resource on which we rely to produce much of our food. Although the topic deserves sombre reflection, the Year of Soils need not mean 12 months of digging up the dirt in an appropriately sombre manner.
The Year of Soils can be celebrated in numerous ways such as sabotaging those fishing trips that require fat earthworms to serve as bait. Simply distract enthusiastic anglers by any means necessary while an accomplice rescues and returns those dedicated earth tillers to their natural habitat. Then raise a glass of bubbly to a worthy cause that requires only a wickedly creative imagination.
